St. Alban’s Church Choir

Music List – August 2022Download

‘I will sing with the Spirit and with the understanding also’

1 Corinthians: 14: 15

There has been a strong choral tradition and a choir at St. Alban’s Church for over 130 years since the chancel was built to make room for a choir and organ. Originally an all male choir, the choir today is a mixed voice robed choir including ladies, men, boys and girls singing Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass (SATB). We are a Royal School of Church Music Affiliated Church and Choir, and have a number of Dean’s and Bishop’s (Bronze and Silver awards) Choristers amongst us.

2017 marked our 40th year of affiliation to the RSCM, and special events took place to commemorate this occasion – further information about this can be found here.

What is the purpose of St. Alban’s Church Choir?

St. Alban’s Church Choir has a long and strong tradition of leading the music at our choral services on a Sunday and other feast day services throughout the year. Our choral services take place on a Sunday at 9.15am and 6.00pm. We rehearse, weekly on a Friday evening, a range of hymns, psalms, canticles and anthems in preparation for our choral services where we sing with and on behalf of the congregation in worship and adoration of God. All of the music we sing is sacred and uses text from scripture, prayers and other religious texts. We sing a varied and balanced repertoire with a range of styles. Our larger, special choral services include Lent and Easter, Patronal Festival, Harvest, Remembrance, Advent and Christmas (Nine Lessons and Carols).

Who can join the choir?

We welcome anyone who might be interested in joining the choir. If you are interested please speak with our Director of Music.

Children who are interested in joining are invited to join via our young peoples’ group ‘Make a Cheerful Noise,’ where the children enjoy musical and social fellowship together. You do not have to sing in the choir to join this group. However, we look for anyone with potential to consider joining the choir.

Please see our ‘Make a Cheerful Noise’ page for more information about this group.

If you are interested in joining the choir but have some questions, please contact our Director of Music who will be pleased to speak with you and answer any questions that you may have.

Choir commitments

Commitment to the choir are rehearsals on a Friday evening and singing at one, sometimes two, of our choral services on a Sunday or on other feast days.
